Taratahi's, Tractor Basics two-day workshop is ideal for those who are either new to or wish to refine or their tractor  handling skills

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • The legal requirements for tractor use
  • Risks when using a tractor and safety features of tractors
  • Pre-start check before tractor use, including fluid levels, tyre pressures and condition, radiator, drive belts and battery condition
  • Greasing daily if contracting tractor use and once a week on-farm situations, where to find grease nipples and how to grease
  • Clearing radiator/screen debris daily if contracting tractor use and once a week on-farm situations
  • Tractor handling to maintain traction and stability; how steering, braking, gears, speed, manoeuvrability, ground conditions, slope and static/loads affects control
  • The difference between 2WD and 4WD tractor dynamics and handling and when to use each
  • Controls and displays, what they show, how they are used and how these are common to most tractors
  • Practice attaching implements with three-point linkage
  • Practice attaching implements to the PTO shaft and three-point linkage
  • Practice attaching and securing loads to minimise stability risks
  • Driving techniques that minimise stability risks when using a front-end loader to increase participant's awareness of safe practices
  • Practice getting on and off the tractor safely
  • Practice tractor diving techniques in a range of situations:
    • Tractor on the flat only without riding the clutch including cornering and backing
    • Driving on flat ground towing a trailer, three-point linkage/PTO implement
    • Driving on flat ground with a front end loader with a load in it
    • Selecting the right gear for the task and putting it in gear at the appropriate time
    • Using the foot and hand throttle when on different ground conditions

PPE gear and tractors will be provided.  Please ensure that you wear good sturdy footwear.

Entry criteria for the workshop : You must be 16 years of age or older, must be physically capable of handling a tractor and it would preferable if you hold a Restricted car licence.

Teas and coffees provided, please bring your own lunch.
