Taratahi's, Shearing Skills four--day rural skills workshop is ideal for those that are completely new to or are looking to refresh their shearing skills.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

PREPARING FOR SHEARING:

  • What are the health and safety risks when shearing and how to minimise. 
  • Personal health and wellbeing when shearing eg hydration, nutrition, stretches,fitness, keeping back warm. 
  • What is a Woolshed Health and Safety Plan and how this assists with safety.
  • The Code of Welfare and its implications when shearing, and risks to stock that need to be considered
  • Components of shearing plant and handpiece and what they do.
  • Setting up a handpiece properly and safely, common mistakes in set-up.  
  • Suitable combs for different environments.
  • Grinding combs and cutters, checking and preparing shearing plant, and adjustments to make during shearing.
  • Catching, restraining and holding sheep during shearing.

SUPPORTING SHEARING:

  •  Allied shed skills:
    • Penning up and keeping tallies to support shearing.
    • Board work to keep it clear for the shearer.
    • Basic wool handling appropriate for the breed and fleece.  Throwing a fleece, skirting it, rolling it up ready for pressing.
    • Operating the wool press, using the designated wool lines.

SHEARING:

  • The shearing process in bite sized chunks, with participants doing that one aspect only with the whole mob.
    • Dagging the whole mob.
    • Crutching the whole mob.  
    • Shearing a hind leg only for the whole mob.
    • Shearing the neck only for the whole mob.
    • Shearing the first side only for the whole mob.
    • Shearing the last side and completing fleece removal for the whole mob.

Please ensure that you wear good sturdy footwear.

Entry criteria for the workshop : You must be 16 years of age or older and must be physically capable of handling equipment involved.

Teas and coffees provided, please bring your own lunch.
