Taratahi's, Post and Rail Fences and Yards one-day rural skills workshop is ideal for those wanting to gain the skills for building or repairing post and rail fences.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • What are the hazards when working with post and rail fences and yards and how to minimise risk including safety gear.
  • How to select the right grade and treatment of materials for different uses.
  • Yard design principles and features to enable: suitable stock flow; effective handling and drafting; feasible restraining options; loading ramp; safe zones for staff; good drainage of the ground; sufficient shelter and water for stock.  Features of the yards the group is working in for the day against these principles.
  • Post and rail fences to see construction features for strength, including staggered rail joins, alternating staple placement, using holding wires.
  • Practice replacing broken rails, and repairing any protrusions. 
  • How to hang a gate, and practice as time allows.  

PPE gear and fencing gear will be provided.  Please ensure you wear sturdy footwear.

Entry criteria for the workshop : You must be 16 years of age or older and must be physically capable of handling the equipment involved in fencing.

Teas and coffees provided, please bring your own lunch.
