Taratahi's, Pasture Management for Small Blocks one-day rural skills workshop is ideal for those small block holders who want to gain knowledge about using their land to the best of their ability.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Perennial ryegrass, white clover, and other locally important pasture species.
  • Measuring pasture quantity, identifying pasture quality.
  • Seasonal variation in pasture growth, quality, and nutrient value.  Identifying likely times of surplus and deficit when action will be required.
  • Link of soil fertility to pasture quality and stock health, using soil tests to determine fertiliser needs.
  • Identifying and discussing pasture weeds that should be controlled, and control options.
  • Stock feed requirements in different seasons and weather.  Aligning stocking rates to feed supply, when this matters most, and how to know if it is too high or too low.
  • The importance of planning ahead with feeding, so you know how closely your pasture growth is likely to match your animal requirements. 
  • Options for supplementary feeding, their feed value, when to use them, calculating quantities required, feeding out methods to avoid health issues and feed wastage.
  • Daily feed allocations: feed requirements of the stock for the time of year, required residuals after grazing, use of supplements when insufficient pasture.
  • The Codes of Welfare application to feed and shelter. 

Entry criteria for the workshop : You must be 16 years of age or older.

Teas and coffees provided, please bring your own lunch.
