Our graduates make an important contribution to New Zealand's largest export earner. To add to these services and to ensure our resources are accessible throughout New Zealand we also offer extramural study as well as full time residential courses.
For students who are considering agriculture as a career but want first hand experience before committing to a course of study, Taratahi offers 'Taster' courses. These four day courses are an excellent way to learn more about Taratahi and discover if farming is the career path you wish to pursue.
This is our most popular course. It is full-time course providing students with the knowledge and skills for a career in sheep and beef or dairy farming.
The course is a mixture of practical, technical and theory work with students spending time on our farms and in the classroom.
Farms
You will work as a member of the team with our experienced farm managers and staff on our commercially operated farms.
Theory
In the classroom learning from tutors who have a wealth of farming knowledge and skills to pass on.
Practical
In our workshops, yards, and paddocks learning from experts all the essential skills that farmers need.
Duration
The course runs for 40 weeks with two intakes per year, starting in January and July.
Recognising that students may be unsure of whether to study the dairy or sheep and beef option, a limited number of students may choose to do a mixed course.
