TATC - Taratahi Certificate in Agriculture

National Certificate in Equine (Stable Procedures) Level 3 -

Sporthorse Stable Assistant

Taratahi, in association with Panorama Equestrian Centre, offer the National Certificate in Equine (Stable Procedures) Level 3 - Sporthorse Stable Assistant. Students study full-time for 32 weeks.   The programme is designed to prepare students to be ‘work ready’ for a variety of equestrian jobs.

The programme offers core theory skills required to work in the equine industry    (including knowledge of care of the horse and saddlery, identification of health and ill health, anatomy, and conformation, preparation for travel, and preparation for exercise, handling, and feeding). It also develops knowledge of bringing a horse into work, horse feed for performance, emergency care, and career paths in the equine industry.

In addition students will learn a variety of general agricultural skills including: ATV handling, fencing and agrichemical use, that will enhance their employment.

The programme also develops student's riding skills, their ability to prepare a horse for showing; maintaining a horse's paddock, caring for horses in a paddock and lungeing a horse.

Programme Structure

All equine skills are delivered at Panorama Equestrian Centre, Gladstone, Masterton. For most weeks students are on the yard four days per week for a mix of classroom and practical learning.  The general skills will be delivered at Taratahi one day per week but will be practised at Panorama. Students are timetabled into a variety of work experience environments to gain experience  in a range of equine businesses in the local area. Students may bring their own horse (subject to approval from Panorama Equestrian Centre) or work with the range of school horses on the Panorama yard. Residential accommodation is available on the Taratahi, Masterton Campus.

Programme Entry Requirements

The main requirement for entry is a passion for horses and their care.  Students must be physically able to handle and ride horses. Students are able to participate in Taster programmes during school holiday periods to experience first-hand the facilities at the Panorama Equestrian Centre and the accommodation at Taratahi’s Campus. This helps students to discover what it’s like to live and learn with Taratahi and Panorama.  It also helps Taratahi decide, where the programme is over-subscribed, which students are likely to be accepted on the programme on the basis of their performance during this time. Minimum age is 16 years.
